Description
Night on the Tuapeka
Artist unknown
Watercolour on paper
Donated by Mr John Reid, 1902
When the Otago Early Settlers Association was first formed in 1898 membership was restricted to settlers who had arrived in Otago before the end of 1861. In other words, the organisation focused largely on ‘old identities’ [people who arrived before the gold rush of 1861] with only a grudging concession to include the earliest of the ‘new iniquities’ [people who arrived in the very early days of the gold rush]. It is perhaps ironic then that one of the earliest paintings accepted by the Association depicted the place that had drawn the ‘new iniquity’ to Otago in the first place. The donor John Reid was second president of the Otago Early Settlers Association in 1899.
