Yorkshire-born artist Robert Hawcridge came to Otago in 1889. Before coming to New Zealand he had been principal show card designer for a firm in Leeds and in Dunedin he spent around 20 years (1889-1909) as chief designer for printers J. Wilkie and Co. After the death of David Con Hutton in 1910, Hawcridge became Master at the Dunedin School of Art. Robert Hawcridge died in 1920, aged 53.
