Portrait paintings of early settlers and community leaders began to be donated to the museum early in its existence. This one of Provincial Superintendent (1861-3) Major Sir John Larkins Cheese Richardson was given in 1909. Richardson, having recently retired from the army in India, came to New Zealand in 1852 and decided to settle in South Otago. In February 1860 he was elected to the Otago Provincial Council and became its Speaker. Just over a year later he was elected Superintendent and led the province through the outbreak of the gold rushes. Richardson also became a Member of Parliament 1862-7, was appointed Speaker of the Legislative Council in 1868 and was first vice-chancellor and later chancellor of the Otago University.
