Robert Fulton was an artist whose sketches of the Otago gold rushes appeared in the Illustrated London News, before he was lost at sea in 1863. Dr Robert Valpy Fulton, who donated this painting, was his nephew. The museum also holds works by Dr Fulton’s mother and aunts. A foundation member of the Otago Early Settlers Association in 1898, Dr Fulton was a committee member from 1898 until 1923. He died in 1924.
