George Dodson came from Yorkshire but emigrated to Victoria in 1852 and Dunedin in 1861. He became a publican in Dunedin and Port Chalmers. Some eight years before his death in 1882, Dodson imported a thoroughbred stallion called Cassivelaunus and a number of mares with which to establish a stud farm at Sawyers Bay. Dodson was well-known for the prominent part he played in the Dunedin Jockey Club, acting as starter at race meetings for many years.
