Description
Easter Encampment of Volunteers at Oamaru
Christopher Aubrey
1886
Watercolour
Donated by Mr R.N. Gordon, 1917

In 1886 an encampment of volunteer forces was held in Oamaru, attended by around 2500 volunteers from Canterbury, Otago and Southland. Christopher Aubrey captured the most spectacular event of the encampment in this painting – an attack on Oamaru Harbour by “foreign” forces, climaxing with the explosion of a spar-mounted torpedo and a submarine mine. Thousands of spectators crowded the slopes of Cape Wanbrow to watch the battle.
