Captain Thomas Robertson is one of New Zealand’s best known maritime artists. He was born in Bo’ness, Scotland in 1819. By the mid-1850s he was commanding ships in Australia. He first came to Port Chalmers in 1859 when in command of the Pirate and subsequently settled at Port Chalmers around 1862. In 1864 he was a member of the Port Chalmers Town Board and the Otago Marine Board. He exhibited several of his paintings at the 1865 New Zealand Exhibition in Dunedin and was awarded a bronze medal. Robertson moved to Japan in 1871 and died at Yokohama in 1873.
