James Paterson, who arrived on the George Canning in 1857, was the father of the Honourable James Paterson, Member of Parliament 1863-68 and Member of the Legislative Council 1869-84. He was also great uncle of William Paterson, secretary of the Otago Early Settlers Association 1915-43.
