Arthur John Burns was the only son of Reverend Thomas Burns, spiritual leader of the Otago settlement. He came to Otago on the Philip Laing with his family in 1848, looked after the family property at Grants Braes and then farmed at East Taieri. In 1861 he married Sarah Scott Dickson. Burns was a member of the Otago Provincial Council and a Member of Parliament. He was also first managing director of the Mosgiel Woollen Factory and manager of the Westport Coal Company.
