Description
Female furniture makers, especially commercial manufacturers, were rare. In the 19th century only one woman briefly appears alongside her male counterparts in the post office directory listings of cabinetmakers in Dunedin - Mrs Mary Ann Major in 1897. Women did make furniture nonetheless. The tapestry and carvings on this chair are said to have been the work of a Miss Holmes in 1859.
