Ellen Penelope Valpy was born and spent much of her childhood in India. In 1849, aged 22, she arrived with her parents, three younger sisters and one younger brother to live in Otago. In January 1852 she married her cousin Henry Jeffreys in the first Church of England wedding ceremony in Otago. After the birth of their first child the family left for New South Wales but around 1860 Ellen appears to return to settle permanently in Otago. She died in 1904.
