Andrew Hamilton (attributed)
Circa 1865
Donated by Mr James Edmund, date unknown

Born and trained in Edinburgh, Andrew Hamilton began his career by exhibiting several times at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1846 and 1859. He also exhibited in London, where he appears to have settled in 1854, before emigrating to New Zealand. In 1863 Hamilton established a studio in Christchurch but in the later 1860s appears to have been operating as an itinerant topographer in Otago, from time to time holding art unions of his work in Dunedin and Lawrence, and on one occasion exhibiting watercolours in a Dunedin stationers’ shop. By 1871 he appears to have made his way to Victoria, Australia.
