Laurence William Wilson was born in England in the 1850s. By the late 1870s he was living and painting in New Zealand. From 1884 he was a member of and regular exhibitor with the Otago Art Society. Along with G.P. Nerli and J.D. Perrett, Wilson established an art school in the Octagon in 1894. In the same year he also became President of the newly-formed Easel Club.
