Reverend Dr. Donald McNaughton Stuart, first minister of Dunedin’s Knox Church and one of Dunedin’s favourite clergymen, is the subject of a number of paintings in the museum’s collection. Stuart, who arrived in 1860, was soon attracting large congregations. His tall figure, with a plaid across his shoulder and carrying a walking stick, became a familiar sight on the streets as he went about ministering to the people of Dunedin. When he died in 1894 the shops closed, 6000 people walked in his funeral procession and thousands more lined the streets.
