Joanna Flanagan [later Mrs William Sibbald]
Oil on canvas
Donated by Mrs W. Sibbald, 1911

Dr Donald McNaughton Stuart, who arrived in Dunedin in 1860 to take up a post as minister of Knox Church (the city’s second Presbyterian church), was one of Dunedin’s most loved clergymen. By the time this portrait was executed by Joanna Flanagan in 1879 Stuart was about 60 years of age. The following year, when Joanna Flanagan wed William Sibbald, their marriage was conducted by Dr Stuart. When Stuart died in 1894 shops closed their doors, 6000 people walked in his funeral procession and thousands more onlookers lined the streets. He has been the subject of numerous works of art.
