Thomas Redmayne
Oil on canvas
Donated by Mrs A Baker, 1946

Thomas Redmayne, from West Yorkshire in England, arrived in Otago in 1857 with his mother and three sisters on the ship Bosworth. In 1859 he became a member of the Dunedin Town Board (member 1859-61, 1862-65). In 1862 Thomas Redmayne married Elizabeth Fazakerly. The couple had eight children before Elizabeth’s death in 1872. Noted caricaturists, Thomas and his brother Robert (who had arrived from America in 1863) established the short-lived Otago Punch magazine in 1865. The museum holds three paintings by Thomas Redmayne, two of which show scenes of Moeraki in the 1860s, where he owned property. Thomas Redmayne departed for California in 1874 and died there in 1886.
